Let Your X's Be Y's
A 14 track electronic album (1h 12m 44s) — released May 27th 2022 on Slum Dunk
Slum Dunk Music are pleased to announce the re-release of Brazilian duo Tetine's album Let Your X's Be Y's - their first full album with British label Soul Jazz Records, originally released in 2008 and now fully remastered and reloaded. Featuring some of Tetine's greatest cuts produced during their Soul Jazz years, Let Your X's be Y's spans a collection of the duo's singular underground micro-hits, including numbers such as "I go to the Doctor" – the electro baile funk jaunt recorded in the early days of the then growing ghetto baile-bass wave that swept Europe in the beginning of 2000s, featuring Deize Tigrona as a guest vocalist; through to the electronic landscapes of "Let The X be X", "Mata Hari Voodoo", "Everything Must Die", "A História Da Garça" and "Slum Dunk". The album also includes some of Tetine's raw and sexually-charged suspended electro funks such as "Ai Amor Me So Horny", "Melô Do Carrão" and "Eu Tô Aberta", as well as, some of their noir-post punk such as "You're the One", "What A Gift to Get", "Men In Uniform", among others.
Defined as a wide mix- up of punk-funk/new wave/post punk baile-bass, Bruno Verner and Eliete Mejorado's luminous and chaotically structured punk-meets-funk sonic ethos, in combination with their mixture of raw punky energy, attitude and electronics, took them to carve an unusual musical path that explored the boundaries between music, art, video and performance, through infamous live actions/events that ranged from rock gigs, DJ sets to gallery installations; from opening Tropicália – A Revolution in Brazilian Culture exhibition at the Barbican Centre in London to numerous performances for galleries, art spaces and festivals from Paris (Palais de Tokyo), to Chicago (The Wire's Adventures in Modern Music Festival), Sonar, Venn Festival, Liverpool Biennal amongst others.
With the re-release of Let Your X's be Y's, Tetine hopes that a new generation of younger listeners will discover and be in contact with this album, considered by some as the duo's most intriguing output, and the album that made them known in the UK. In short, Let Your X's be Y's defines a particular effervescent sonic moment in the trajectory of the duo, possessed with a strangely euphoric melancholy and visceral DIY bedroom pop rawness. Dig it and you will find music of great beauty.
Below are some of the praise Let Your X's b Y's got at the time! We hope you enjoy it!
"The off-kilter, mutated funk, electro and sound manipulation that comprises this inventive and gravely album is an absolute treat." PLAN B
"The gem on their 8th album is "Let the X Be X," which is so awesome and catchy it sounds familiar. What makes Tetine so good is that their off-beat, messy quality makes them natural, seemingly effortless, and therefore beautiful." Vanessa Labi, THE URB Magazine, 4.5/5
"The gleeful merging of 80's synths, baile funk beats and Bruno Verner's non-singing voice allow them to push over an hour mark." UNCUT 4/5
"Kinder than their full-on live shows it pulls you in and holds you with its ever changing flow and colour, never boring, always inventive." MUSIC WEEK
"Soul Jazz have snapped them up and the results are hottt." Recommended album – DAZED & CONFUSED.
"The album is a breath of fresh air; at times evocative of early Pet Shop Boys, on tracks like What A Gift To Get, and at others conjuring up the template for the joyful sound of new Brazil on Ai Amor/Me So Horny. As a piece it holds together with wit and charm. Kinder than their full-on live shows it pulls you in and holds you with its ever changing flow and colour, never boring, always inventive." Nick Tesco / Music Week
"Brazilian duo prone to ritualistic performances headline with a sound that ranges across electro punk, atonal orchestral pieces, baile funk and Miami bass..." TiME OUT London, Critics Choice.
"Trying to pin down Tetine's sound is almost an artform in itself. Ingested with their history in mind, 'Let Your Xs Be Ys' feels as playful as it is relaxed - sound tracking an artistic project that wears its authenticity, confidence and continuing need for experimentation proudly on its sleeve. Less 'we do not give a fuck', more 'we do not need to give a fuck' - a crucial difference in a music market riddled with attitude, desperately seeking substance." Stuart Buchanan, FAT PLANET BLOG
"A História Da Garça sounds like a soundtrack for a dystopian flick: acid sounds; cool Portuguese raps, and spooky new wave synths. It's one of the freshest sounds I've heard in ages. I'm dropping the recommended here on originality." Turntablelab, US
"Art duo Tetine's pumped-up punk-meets-funk sound and frenzied on-stage antics make them a creative force to be reckoned with. Having released a prolific eight albums and performed everywhere from Sonar to the Whitechapel Gallery, Eliete Mejorado and Bruno Verner are beacons of their native Sao Paulo avant-garde electronic underground.(...) This is the radical duo who have brought Funk Carioca within London's cultural radar'. Their lyrics may still talk of real-life sex and domesticity but this album is set to be worlds away from the sample-laden funk of their earlier tracks like 'L.I.C.K. My Favela." Aimee Farrell, Fact Mag
Brazilian duo Tetine, that's Bruno and Eli are like a little paradise of music making. PIX Magazine
About 25 years ago, Arnold Schwarzenegger told Playboy Channel viewers that the ass is the best thing about Brazilian women and their national culture. Such stereotypes of Brazil are exactly what Sao Paulo-bred tropical mutant punk funk group Tetine explores, critiques, exploits, and ironically salutes. XLR8R
The new Tetine album is a joy. It oozes charm and atmosphere with a delicious punk-funk-disco sound from Brazilian duo Bruno Verner and Eliete Mejorado A tropical meld of genres. You can hear the exotic parts of Sao Paulo, New York and London soundtracked within these songs. It will make you want to dance yet it doesn't pander to the usual dance production formulas.
